Warships hovered over Solomon Fyre, seen when the smoke cleared at times.

Just to the east of the great city brought low by the Imperium, Jak and Ellora strode across the desert, resolute. The threat of the Imperium ahead would not discourage them. Upon discovering the theft of the egg, they left the Dragonell Mountains through the pouring rain to visit arabi Sasan al-Kol for the supplies needed to cross the sands westward. It had been a quick stop. Based on what Fet Jagor shared, the egg would go to an Imperium’s magistrate setting up Solomon Fyre’s new government. It presented uncertainty, especially since Ellora didn’t really trust Jak. Once he related how dangerous it would be—Jak couldn’t know if House Angelus retained power, if his family still existed, or if he’d have any allies there—Ellora accepted Jak’s offer to help. After all, being city-born, he knew more about Solomon Fyre than she did even if the worst had come to pass.

Once they had time to talk, Ellora realized Jak was not a Will Master. Not in the way she thought. He was like a newly born babe—understanding little and capable of even less.

It had been a miracle he summoned enough Will to save them from Fet Jagor.

Now they traveled together. At night, Jak read from a copy of the All-Father’s holy book supplied by Sasan. And Jak focused on what could aid them.

Because they would need all the help they could get.

“Those ships there,” Ellora said, pointing. “Those are from the Imperium, yes?”

Jak nodded. The sun beat down on them, the heat arid, and he took the opportunity to drink some water. He offered it to Ellora, who gratefully accepted. “They are our ancestors, though so far gone from our past they might as well be aliens. History relates those tales of Old Erth. It was a dark time, one where the origins of the Imperium were seeded in humanity’s survival from its own excesses.”

“I cannot imagine flying to the stars and what that would be like,” Ellora said. Simultaneously, at the mention of flying, Jak knew she thought of Ruthloc again.

Jak looked up at a cloudless azure sky as if he could see the star-strewn void beyond.

“Maybe one day you will.”

“The heat must be baking that brain of yours,” she said, waving aside his suggestion as if it could never happen. “These ancestors you mention. Do you know why they are here? Why war with the planet they hailed from?”

“Merchants arrived first, asking about trade and Erth’s resources,” Jak said. He gave her a dark look. “They were spies. Nothing more. They are here to steal whatever they need. And to subjugate us all in the process.”

“But why?”

Jak shrugged. “Why do men do anything? It is rarely for altruistic reasons, Ellora.”

“Power then.”

“Power,” he agreed. “And that desire for power is what we must be wary of when we reach Solomon Fyre and find this magistrate. We will have to tread quite carefully. I’ve known men like this my whole life.
